Who is Donkey in Shrek based on?

All of the characters in Shrek, or at least most, are based on some fairytale figure. The only major character in Shrek that I cannot find the original fairytale figure for is Donkey, so who is he based on? “all charecters are donkey in sherk based on.” was my question really worded this bad? Which Shrek movie has the most fairytale characters?

Hi, I’m doing fairy stories with my Year 1 and 2 class and wanted to show them Shrek because they contain all different fairytale characters. I’ve only seen the first one the whole way through and part of the second one but haven’t seen the third one at all. Which one has the most of these characters appearing in it??
